Research: Automating Semantic Graph Based Knowledge Assessment

My dissertation research focused on investigating new ways in which students creation of semantic graphs (like concept maps) can promote systemic thinking. This involved designing and developing diagraming software to test research questions about how mental models are cognitively constructed and how technology can best support this. A preliminary study found that improved usability can reduce the time it takes to train 5th grade students to create concept maps. Follow-up studies mapped out novice-expert differences in learning.
