Research: Investigating Diagrams as Instructional Aids

I participated in research of the aesthetic and pedagogical affordances of scientific diagrams. The work investigated correlations between the use of aesthetic devices and perceptions of clarity and informativeness. Results suggest that devices, such as showing side-by-side comparisons and coupling verbal and visual explanations of invisible features are the most effective ways of communicating system dynamics. Further study is needed.
